Preparation for Surgery

If you are having surgery or a day procedure it is important to check with your General Practitioner regarding any medications you are taking. With the advice of your doctor, you may need to stop taking blood thinning medications, to minimise bleeding prior to your surgery, also

You will need to have someone available to take you home, as you will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours after having an anaesthetic.

If you smoke, you should stop or cut down to reduce your surgery risks and improve your recovery

Eat a well balanced diet

Report any skin infections, cuts or sores prior to surgery

Recovery Period

Your recovery time will depend on what type of surgery or procedure you are having, but here are some helpful hints to assist in your recovery:

Arrange for someone to help you with everyday tasks during your recovery period after the surgery

Take your pain medication as directed. Begin the pain medication as you start to feel uncomfortable, but before you are in severe pain. This will help control the pain.

If you have had surgery on an arm, hand, leg or foot, keep that extremity elevated. This will help decrease swelling and pain.

If you continue to feel unwell contact your General Practitioner or present to the nearest emergency room.
